1. Introduction
Rodnya ("we", "us", "our") is a private messaging and calling application. We are committed to protecting your personal data. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other applicable privacy laws.

2. Data We Collect
2.1 Account Data
- Phone number - used as your unique identifier for registration and login via SMS verification.
- Display name (optional) - a nickname you may set in your profile.
- Avatar image (optional) - a profile photo you may upload.
- Online status - your last-seen timestamp, visibility of which you control in Settings.
2.2 Messaging and Call Data
- Messages - stored on our servers in end-to-end encrypted form. We cannot read the content of your messages. Your private encryption key never leaves your device.
- Call logs - we store metadata about your calls (counterparty identifier, call time, duration, and call type). Call audio and video are transmitted through our calling infrastructure in end-to-end encrypted form and are never recorded or stored by us.
- Encryption keys - your public encryption key is stored on our server to enable end-to-end encryption. Your private key is stored only on your device.
2.3 Device and Technical Data
- Push notification tokens - device identifiers required to deliver incoming call and message notifications. These include Apple Push Notification service (APNs) tokens for iOS and Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) tokens for Android.
- Device identifier - an internal identifier used to manage active sessions.
- Crash reports - anonymous crash logs and diagnostic data collected via Firebase Crashlytics to help us fix bugs. These do not contain your personal information.
- Basic analytics - anonymous usage events (e.g., call started, call ended) collected via Firebase Analytics to improve app quality. Your internal account identifier (not your phone number or name) may be associated with these events. No message content, contact names, or phone numbers are collected for analytics.
2.3a Camera Access
When you enable video during a call, the app requests access to your device camera. The video stream is transmitted directly to the other participant using end-to-end encryption and is never recorded or stored by us. Camera access is used exclusively during an active video call and only with your explicit consent.
2.4 Contact List Access
If you grant permission, the app reads your device contacts locally to display call and messaging buttons next to registered users. Your contacts are not uploaded to our servers. Only phone numbers (in anonymized E.164 format) are sent to our server to check which of your contacts are registered - they are not stored during this process. This is the same contact discovery method used by major messaging apps.
3. How We Use Your Data
We use your data exclusively to:
- Create and authenticate your account.
- Deliver messages and call notifications to your device.
- Enable end-to-end encrypted communication.
- Match your phone contacts with registered users (without uploading your contact list).
- Display your profile to people you communicate with, subject to your privacy settings.
- Diagnose crashes and improve app stability.
We do not:
- Sell your data to third parties.
- Use your data for advertising.
- Profile you for marketing purposes.
- Record or store your calls.
- Read your messages (they are end-to-end encrypted).
4. Data Sharing and Third Parties
We use third-party infrastructure services to operate the app (cloud infrastructure, voice call relay, SMS verification, push notifications, crash reporting, and analytics). We do not share your data with any other third parties. We may change infrastructure providers in the future without affecting how your data is protected.
5. End-to-End Encryption
Messages and calls in Rodnya are protected by end-to-end encryption:
- Your private key is generated and stored exclusively on your device.
- Your public key is stored on our server so that other users can encrypt messages for you.
- Message content stored on our servers is encrypted and cannot be decrypted by us - only by the intended recipient's device.
- Call audio and video are encrypted end-to-end between participants and are never stored.
5a. Blocking, Reporting, and Content Moderation
- Blocked users: When you block a user, a record is stored in our database linking your account to the blocked user's account. This prevents the blocked user from sending you messages or calling you. You may unblock a user at any time, which removes this record.
- Reports: When you report a user, we store the reported user's identifier and the reason you selected. Reports are reviewed within 24 hours. We may remove content and terminate accounts found to be in violation of our Terms of Service.
- Moderation data (block and report records) is deleted when either party deletes their account.
6. Data Retention
- Account data is retained as long as your account exists.
- Messages (encrypted) are retained until you or the conversation participant deletes them.
- Call logs can be deleted by you at any time from within the app.
- Push tokens are automatically removed when you sign out or uninstall the app.
When you delete your account, all associated personal data is permanently removed from our servers. This includes your profile, contacts, messages, call history, encryption keys, push tokens, block records, and report records. This action is irreversible.
7. Your Rights (GDPR)
Under the GDPR, you have the following rights: Right of access, Right to rectification, Right to erasure ("right to be forgotten"), Right to data portability, Right to restrict processing, Right to object, Right to withdraw consent.

8. Data Security
All data in transit is encrypted using TLS. All data at rest is encrypted on our servers. Message content is additionally protected by end-to-end encryption. Biometric lock is available as an optional security feature. Row-level security policies ensure that users can only access their own data and data from conversations they participate in.
9. Children's Privacy
Rodnya is not intended for children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.
10. International Data Transfers
Your data may be processed on servers located outside your country of residence. We ensure that any such transfers comply with applicable data protection laws and that appropriate safeguards are in place.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the app. The "Last updated" date at the top indicates the most recent revision.
